On Saturday, April 14, our Ampirical-San Diego team participated in their first Beach Cleanup of 2018. This annual outreach event was our 9th Beach Cleanup since partnering with I Love A Clean San Diego.

“I’m so proud of my fellow Amperes (and their friends and families) that are willing to give up their Saturday morning to clean a beach!” Said Ampirical Project Support Specialist Lisa DeBel. “We did our part in helping to keep trash out of our beautiful bay & ocean; and out of the bellies of seabirds, mammals, and fish.”

In addition to picking up trash, our team collected valuable data using a tracking card to identify what types of debris are most problematic regionally. The tracking card not only gives the city a better idea of what types of trash are most common, but additionally can help with education, outreach, and legislation to prevent specific harmful items ending up as marine debris.

Overall, our team removed an impressive 1,492 items from South Shores in Mission Bay. In that total, we collected 1,102 plastic items, 253 cigarette butts, and a record 44 tennis balls.

Thank you to all those who participated!
